I have a 1995 Wellcraft with a Volvo Penta IO 5.8 FL. The starter housing that surrounds the starter rotor has a small 1/8" hole on the bottom of the housing that is dribbling water. I can put my finger on the hole and the water stops. I just put the boat in the water. (Fresh Water) Any ideas of cause? Winterizing incorrectly? Will the replacement of the starter housing correct this or is there a seal in the starter where it connects to the flywheel? I don't think water should be in the starter housing. Any chance of shock? Thanks!

I would go check the u-joint boot. There is a galley between there and the bell housing for air expansion so if it is leaking, it may push water back towards the back of the engine. There is one other and more likely spot for water to get in the starter and that would be a freeze plug on the back of the block blowing water on the flywheel and into the starter nose cone. Either way, sealing up the hole on the starter will not help.

Thank you for the advice. I am having our mechanic check it out. Do you think I can still run the boat? The leak is small. Engine is heating normal. Oil has no water in it. If the frost plug is bad can these be drilled and replaced easily or is it a big job. Thanks again.

You will have to slide the engine away from the bell housing and drop the flex plate to get to that leak. You also risk the starter failure which will leave you shouting "CQ, CQ" in the radio.

Also would want to be real sure that is what the problem is.
