jim, being a 4 cyl it should be a 2.15,however, you better be sure of yourself. Pull the prop off, take off your zinc ring and the gear ratio should be stamped on the lower unit housing. Usually this is correct unless some one has swapped the gears out of your housing and interchanged them with another set. good luck |

jim, im not sure...the 280 is very similar to the 270 unit, however, the 290 unit with power trim would be an upgrade. I believe a lot of the parts off a 270 will fit onto a 280. It is possible that the previous owner(if applicable)interchanged outdrives. |

Volvo outdrives on older boats tend towards becoming "frankendrives". The transom shield for 250 drives will happily accept 270 or 280 lower units, and these units even though they left the factory as single prop units can be readily converted to duo-prop. When they leave the factory, the number on the P/N plate tells you what it is. HOWEVER... one can swap the lower third of a "leg" and change not only the gear ratio, but the configuration of the exhaust port and conversion to Duoprop. The P/N you indicated would mean ONLY that the upper 1/3 of the "leg" left the factory in the company of a 280 lower unit with 1.61 reduction ratio. Today....???? who knows??? Best way to determine your ratio is to pull the prop and zinc per a previous post. The big differentiator between a 280 and earlier drives is the configuration of the exhaust port. 280 and later have a wider than high exhaust port that extends the whole width of the cavitaion plate, while earlier drives have a smallish "scoop" that doubles as a trim tab that is centered under the cavitation plate. BTW...if you have a 4 clylinder engine you should have a 2.15 reduction unit...otherwise you will never get the setup to run correctly. |
