I have a 5.0 Volvo Penta with 125 hours. It will run at planeing speed for 5-15 min. and then lose power as though it's running out of gas. At low rpm it will be run rough for about a minute and smooth out at which time I can resume at a planeing speed for awhile. Most recently I have also noticed a whining noise when this happens and I slow down which will go away in a short time.

Can you tell me what I might be able to do to correct. I would guess a fuel delivery issue, filter? or fuel pump?

Fill a jerry jug with fuel and bypass the tank on your boat. This will rule out a stuck anti-syphon valve.

What year is the engine?

When did you last change / inspect your fuel filter?

Mike,

After replacing the fuel filter the boat ran much longer, over an hour, before the symptom reappeared. Although it was slowing and then surging I was able to stay on plane. I thought that I would try another new filter.

Do you know the location and accessibility of the anti siphon valve? Can it be easily inspected/cleaned or replaced. I would prefer not to try the "jerry jug" approach, especially when the problem may take awhile to reoccur.

Thanks

RE: " After replacing the fuel filter the boat ran much longer, over an hour, "

Sounds like water in the fuel... You can save yourself some $$$, if you just drain the fuel filter into a glass jar (wait a few mins to see if water separates out) and reinstall the filter.
Be careful that it reseals and does not leak.

Robert,

Thank you.

I have already put on another filter and did exactly as you suggested in the process. I did not observe any water in the fuel drained from the filter.

I had also added a can of sea foam and am thinking about another as well. What do you think?
