Brick Boaters - My mechanic repaired a blown cylinder head on my AQ171C, started the engine, and found it running great at mid-range and full-throtte. Below 2000 RPM, it dies. He has rebuilt the carbs, checked the vacuum lines, attempted to adjust the idle screws, and double-check the timing with a timing light. He runs a 1-man marine repair shop and is Mercury-certified, but has little Volvo marine experience. An auto engine with similar electronic ignition to the AQ171C, he says, requires disconnecting the tach and other components in order to correctly set the timing at idle. He wonders if the Volvo might have a similar quirk. He does not have the shop manual for the AQ171C Any secrets of setting idle on this engine you can pass along will be greatly appreciated. He is not a computer-guy, either. I will print out any suggestions and put them in his hands. |

You and your mechanic would benefit of getting hold of a copy of the Seloc manual covering your engine model (1968-1991 engines). The ignition section in that manual covers the Renix electronic ignition system installed in your engine. Perhaps the problem is not ignition but rather idle mixture and carb synchronization. I hope your mechanic knows that the idle mixture screw in your engines carbs has a setting of about 10 turns open versus 1 to 1-1/2 turns in Mercruisers. Again, the Seloc manual covers all this. |

The idle circuit is not functioning properly on one or both carbs. if he can place a cloth over the suspect carburetor and have it idle, he will have narrowed it to front, rear or both. the idle circuit can be plugged with varnish which can be difficult to remove if it did not soak overnight in a tank and blown out with compressed air. Good Luck! |

Eureka! My AQ171C idles like a purring kitten! The carbs needed about 3 trips in the acid bath before the idle circuit became fully clean, but all is now well. Thanks for all the suggestions that pointed to getting the carbs thoroughly clean. Water skiing season is open again! |
