The Volvo manual says use a 50/50 mixture of fresh water and 'corrosion-proof glycol', such as Esso Cutwell 40, Shell Donax C or equivalent. I can't find this stuff -- what is it? What should I use if I just want to flush the raw system of rust and corrosion as part of preparing the boat for storage, use, etc. ?? Is a radiator flushing agent okay to use? Thank you. |

The only thing I have seen is this: http://tinyurl.com/lqpved I have not used it but have been curious about it and whether or not it really does any good or harm. |

Isnt low tox antifreeze the same, its ethlyene glycol (i think) which is supposed to be better for the enviroment and the critters that are drawn to the taste of antifreeze. |

Seems to be some confusion in the top posting. Cutwell and Donax are not intended to be used in a running engine as cooling liquid!!! Vinterizing an engine may be done mainly 2 ways: 1: Drained system. Here You need to flush out the system, let the engine run some minutes with the mix of Cutwell alt Donax AND water, then drain! The Cutwell/Donax will then leave a protective oil-film preventing corrosion and scaling. 2: Fill system with anti-freeze and leave filled during storage. What is important is that the anti freeze contains anti corrosion inhibitors to prevent damage on gaskets etc. No anti-freeze is totally environment friendly and should be drained and disposed of as toxic waste. |

Where do I find Cutwell or Shell Donax? I understand I use it as a 'flushing and protective' agent, not a storage agent. Thanks for all the replies, folks. I'm learning here..... btw... the Volvo AQ131 has an open (raw) and a closed system. The closed system uses antifreeze/coolant and I believe I treat it like an auto system. I'm mainly concerned with maintaining the open system. From what I can tell, Morten, that system can't be 'closed' off with a storage agent in the winter. Thanks. |

Cutwell (cutting oil for drilling/milling etc)/Donax (Shell Donax is a ATF fluid and I would stay away from it) or similar is quite easy to get if You have a machine shop in vicinity. Just go and get some quarts of the cutting oil mix they use! As to the raw water part of the 131, just suck some anti-freeze mix through the raw water pump until it goes out the exhaust, shut off the engine! Normally I would recommend to drain the manifold first to be sure no fresh water is left. |
