Do you have power tilt or power trim? In any case, if a switch is the problem, I don't see why you cannot replace it.

John, trim tabs and power trim are two different things. Power trim is a hydraulic system to move the outdrive up or down a few degrees to that the propeller thrust remains parallel to the water surface, and trim tabs are located port and startboard of the hull to correct list and to bring the bow up and down.

Also, in Volvo Penta outdrives, power tilt and power trim are two different things. Many outdrives have just power tilt, which is an electric device to lift the outdrive up, say for trailering the boat, but cannot be used for trimming the outdrive.

If the switch is located in the throttle lever, I assume it must be a "power trim" switch.

Depending on the control model you have installed (there are many different models in the market), the switch may be difficult or nearly impossible to replace. However, installing a separate switch independent from the control is usually cheaper than replacing the whole control.
