I may be able to acquire a complete 290 drive and TS. I currently run a 280. Does anyone know if the cut out for the 290 is smaller, larger or the same as the 280? If it is larger, or the same I will move forward. If it is smaller, I do not feel like doing more glasswork to the transom. Thanks!

The cut for the 290 is bigger than for the 280.

The 290 and 280 appear to be very similar. What advantages does the 290 have over the 280, in your opinion?

For what I have seen, the 290 is a modified 280 with a larger transom shield and a different suspension fork in the intermediate unit. The lower and upper gear units are identical in both the 280 and 290. Theoretically, the 290 modifications in the intermediate assembly and the wider transom shield would make it more robust than the 280.

Main difference, 290 is Power Trim, 280 normally only lift. If buying an old 290 from salt water use, check the trim cylinders and hydraulic lines.
