Hi.I now have a aq125a penta with a 270 outdrive in a bayliner capri cuddy 20.5 or 21.5 ft. not sure how to measure boats(My first boat).Anyway I took it out for a good hr. runs real good, pressure Good, temp Good, charging Good,.But when I reached 4200 rpm it cut out and then pickup at 3000 rpm,I did this a couple times(nervously).I reached 23mph with a 14x17 prop. Is this what I should expect or is there a fuel filter problem, points, carb, bad rpm gauge? any ideas.
Thanks.

Can you please explain what you mean by 'cut out'?

Does the engine stall, sputter, lose power or just rev up without propelling the boat forward?

My guess is that either the engine was starving fuel or you had an ignition problem. If the boat is "new to you", you may want to make sure that the fuel system is in good condition, namely: fresh gas, anti-syphon valve not sticking, fuel filter clean/renewed, small fuel filter inside the carburator clean, carburetor bowl clean.

To start with a clean slate, you may want to check the cap and rotor in the distributor and replace them if in doubt. Also, you should install a new set of ignition wires and spark plugs. And if the distributor has points and condenser, consider getting rid of them and upgrading to an electronic ignition kit (Pertronix #2842). Do a searh in the forum, as this has been debated numerous times.
