I bought my boat as a non-running project. The upper alternator bracket (the long one with the slotted hole) was a bent and welded up mess causing it to eat the belt. I picked up a bracket off an AQ120 which shares the part number, but it's too short. Except for making something custom does anyone know why the bracket is too short? It makes the alternator touch the distributor.

Maybe the bracket is not too short and the original bracket was modified so that your engine could use an aftermarket alternator that is bigger than the original SEV Marchal. I had to modify the bracket on my former AQ140 a few years ago to fit a different alternator.

Here are some pictures. As you can see the belt does not even come close to being tight and the alternator near hits the distributor.pic1pic2

Oh. This is the alternator that was on it but I had it rebuilt. The old bracket was a welded up, bent mess, and broken again.

Your alternator seems to be a Delco Remy, which is of a larger size than the original SEV Marchal. This is why the bracket has been modified.
