Does the engine have to come out in order to change the gimbal bearing? I have the drive off and i think if i play with it a little bit i can get that bearing out from the back but im not sure. Could someone please let me know how to go about doin this? |

You have to pull the engine to get the shaft and bearings out. |

Yes, you should remove engine and outdrive if you want to do the job safely. Please read this: http://www.marineengine.com/discus/messages/12487/85861.shtml |

I appreciate it and el i have looked everywhere for a bearing and i know you told me that i could take it to a bearing supplier and match it but we dont have anything like that around here without having to drive 100 miles. DO you have an idea of a website that might sell them? |

When you remove the primary shaft (#69) inspect it's condition. Take some 600 grit paper and polish any burrs, corrosion or foreign material. This will ensure a nice fit between the shaft and the seal. Good luck. |

As Mike said, you need lip seals 70 & 74 and the bearing 71. http://www.volvopentastore.com/CONNECTING_COMPONENTS_AQ_DRIVE_UNIT_270_275A/dm/c art_id.657400424--category_id.333144--list_time.1209566548--session_id.196162570 --store_id.366--view_id.327275 I do not have the bearing real number, but those are very common bearings. I never had problems getting bearings and seals locally from bearing suppliers. |

Justin, same as the other one, the pilot bearing is a common type of bearing and should not be difficult to source. Also, remember that the pilot bearing does not turn, it only guides the shaft into the flywheel. |

Well when i stick my finger in it its kind of rusty,no slack, just a little rusty so while i had the engine out i figured i would go on and change it but i might just grease it and let it be. |

A new one will turn like this in 2-3 years unless it is very well greased during installation. |
