Hi all,

Wondering if someone could help me out here... New boater, but some-what mechanically inclined, so I decided to change oil in my 2001 VP, 4.3 GL.

Warmed engine, shut off, removed old oil, and replaced with what I thought was correct oil- Valvoline SAE 5W-30, full synthetic.

Started up directly after and ran for a couple mins, but now (next day) go to start, and she'll do is one or two cranks, and it just won't kick over. It's just stuck or dead. Nothing. I feel as if the oil is too thick maybe, but wanted your opinions and maybe some advice here.

Thanks,
David

I want to say you have another problem like maybe it jumped time when you turned it off. I wouldnt think it would have anything to do with the type of oil.

Hydrolocked engine? Try removing the spark plugs, then attempt to start again. Also, check the ground between the battery and the engine block.

The starting problem has nothing to do with the oil change. 5W-30 sounds as though it might be too low of a viscosity for your engine. Check the engine manufacturer's viscosity recommendation. Most automobiles in the last 20 years do use 5W-30 and some even went to 5W-20 but many marine engines require a heavier viscosity. Synthetic oil is of no real advantage over petroleum based oil in a recipocating engine so consider any additional cost and your budget.

Wow, really unexpected if this hydrolock thing happened. All I did was change oil ;-)

Anyway, I will be checking it today, and I REALLY appreciate this site. I'll update what I find out.

btw, Helper. You may have wanted to create a different thread for your question. May get lost or ignored in my oil change thread. I'm no expert, but 30mph sounds about right for 120 hp.

Really Stan? I have the AQ125B on a 19 1/2 B-liner w/14 X 19 prop and can run 34 @ 4500 per my 22 yr old speed-O-meter. WOT is only a few miles faster. (I'm going to try a 14 X 17 here soon and expect a mile or two faster. I'm also going to get a hand held chart plotter to measure speed. How are you proped??? I think for a 16 ft boat you can get much more top end.

I have a 15 X 17 on there now.I did get hold of a 14 X 19 and put this on for a try when we went fishing last week, but when we got in the water and headed out to sea big vibration and had to take her back in.(BROUGHT THE PROP S/H on EBAY)looked good visually, but after the trial in the water could see 1 blade was bent,so this stopped me from seeing if I could get more speed out of the boat.I had a 14 1/2 X 17 (which was a 15 X 17 worn down)and still could not get more that 25 MPH.will try the 14 X 19 when i get it repaired.and I thought I might try and take the trim pin up one knotch to kick the motor out a bit.any sugestions appreciated.

Gents, I suggest that speedometers are not always a very reliable method for measuring a boat's speed. I personally prefer to rely on GPS readings while still keeping in mind some other variables (condition of the sea, wind, currents, etc) when evaluating a boat's speed.

We have had in the past several discussions in this forum where some people claimed that their boats achieved very high speeds, but unfortunately those speeds were physically impossible to obtain with their power plants. Almost invariably, the declared speeds were based on speedometer readings.

Then, of course, we have to distinguish between knots (nautical miles per hour) and land miles per hour. One knot equals 1.15 land miles per hour, so it is importat to state which units we are using when talking about a boat's speed.
