I am new to Volvo Penta motors. Here is my problem, When the motor starts it idles fine, but when I run it around 800 900 rpm it starts to surge, if go 1000 rpm or above it seem to smooth right out. I can actually see the butteryfly move in the throttle body move. not a lot but just enough to make it surge. If anyone could help it would be great. |

I have the same problem with my 1994 5.0FI. I also have a hard time starting the engine when it is warmed up. |

If you find out what sensor, could you please let me know? I'm sure my hard starting has to do with another sensor of some sort, but the Volvo dealer said everything checked out. I'm sure a Ford mechanic could pin point it. |

I've done some research in the past week and have come up with some possible reasons for the surging at idle or low rpms. 1.) There is a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel injector rail. If the regulator fails internally, it can pass raw fuel through the vacuum line to the intake manifold. The engine ecu will react to the additional fuel by adding air to the system, hence the surging and pulsating throttle body. 2.) There is a fuel vapor release valve that also has a vacum line attached to it and the intake manifold. If this valve isn't working correctly, it will also pass fuel through the vacuum line to the intake manifold causing too much fuel to enter the system. I haven't had a chance to test these two items on my engine. The easiest way to test them, is to put a section of clear tube on the vacuum lines and visually see if any gas is passing through. |

Thanks for the infomation. I will have to give it a try as soon as I get some time. The marina working on it is trying to figure it out. I will have to let them know. Unless they got it by now. thanks |

Here is what wae have come up with . Bad Gas, the person before me did not take care of the gas by treating it. So I am off to drain the tank and clean the tank. This is going to cost whit the price of gas right now. |

.here is an update i changed the oil pressure sending unit, oil pressure switch, coolant temp sensor, & coolant temp switch. it seem to have fixed the problem of surging |
