I took my boat out today for a sail and i heard a loud knocking noise coming from one engine and the temperature began to rise. I got back to shore and my mechanic told me it sounds like a piston or ring or somethign to that extent is loose in the head. Am not sure as to his exact words but he told me he would have to check the valve cover to see if anything is bent and take it from there. This engine was recently worked on and i think it has about 500 hours. Its a ford 5.0 engine. What do you suggest as i am in the caribbean and getting things here is rather expensive and difficult. should i get a new/used engine or try and rebuild it again. Thanks

That's not too old. You might have a rocker arm or push rod problem, which can be cured with a minor rip down.

Keep the faith!

Wow, such suffrage. To be stuck in the Caribbean and have a broken boat, lol.

Jeff is right. Let them have a looksee, but if it were too critical I would replace the longblock. O O O pick me, pick me.

Dot't say that. I just had a guy who got back to his dock fine with a giant bulge in the side of his block. He wanted me to tune it up for him.

mechanic looked at it and listened while it was running and assumed it could be a loose valve in the upper part of the engine. he said he will take it down today to pinpoint exactly whats the problem..... I got my fingers crossed.

Thanks guys

It's not a loose valve if the temp started to rise. Might be a head gasket. Good luck.
