i removed my top of the out drive to get to the ujoints, 4 or 5 bolts and un screw the boot and pull up and out at the same time keep your legg down, because there is a gear shaft about 4 in down atached to it ,its simple once to get into it, go for it your learn more about your boat that way, better than removing motor unless you have to replace your gimbal bearing?,then pull the motor, remenber to drain the oil out of your leg ,i forgot made a mess |

Be aware that a noise from the general vicinity of the U-joints could also be the drive shaft bearing located in the bell housing. In my engine, the bell housing has a grease fitting on its top to grease that bearing. It would be difficult to replace that bearing if you find it to be bad without pulling the engine and removing the bell housing from the engine. Also, if you want to replace the U-joints, you should first remove the whole U-joint assembly from the upper gear unit of the 280 outdrive. To do that, you need to remove the clamp ring which requires the removal of 4 internal wrenching bolts. Once removed, there is one small bolt that goes from the front, back into the center of the shaft. Once removed, the U-joint assembly will then slide out free to work on. While you have it out you should replace the oil seal, the O-ring for the clamp ring the O-ring between the upper gear housing and intermediate housing, and the U-joint boot. |
