HI
I have a volvo penta 5.0, recently i checked the oil and there is water mixed in. I have runned the boat but the temperature havent moved as someone told me it could be the head casket blown. also i was told that the manifolds may be fairly new. What would you say could be the issue, because the engine sounds really good and shows no sign of fault. Oh, i have also noticed that after a good hour or so run and is time to dock, the same engine would not idle. I now asssume thats beacuse of the oil and water mixure. any soulution?

Best case blown headgasket. Could also be riser, exhaust manifold, cracked head or cracked block. Flush the oil immediately by running it then do oil change, run again then another oil change until the oil runs clear. If you leave oil and water in your motor it will destroy it.
As for diagnosing You or your mechanic will first do a compression check and a leakdown test to check for motor damage. If the numbers are good you or they will proceed by disassembling the exhaust manifold and riser, and pressure testing them individually. If the manifold and riser tests ok you will have to pressure test the head and block independently by sealing and pressurizing the water passages. Although I’d just change the head gasket at that point and see if that fixes it.
