The little piston on the outboard side of the leg seems to be seized (the one that pushes down to lift the leg.) The worm gear/motor/etc all seems to be fine otherwise. Any ideas on how to free this up?

The mechanical lift is attached to the transom shield by means of two Allen screws. If you have the boat on a trailer, just remove the screws and pull the whole thing out so that you can either free it or investigate why it is not working.
One note, though: I have noticed that some the mechanical lift devices perform well when the boat is in the water, but have difficulty lifting a leg when the boat has been dry for awhile. While there could be more than one reason for that, remember that the 280 is a heavy leg but (like al objects) it is much lighter while in the water. |

I had a similar problem and found that the Shaft was bent. The previous owner always kept it down a little to keep the reverse latch from catching. When I removed it I found the shaft very bent (3/8" in center) and the bottom of the sleeve to be broken off. I was able to get through the season by bending it straight with a large press. I have a replacement now though.
