in a 1983 thundercraft 17 foot. was wondering if the aq 145 with 280 is a rare motor? i don't seem to see a lot of them around on this site. i inherited this boat for a debt, it has a broken tilt hose. had it running in a big bucket and ran good. got the manual and took off the out drive to replace all the hoses for the tilt/trim. since then i had multiple health problems and can't finish. what is this stuff worth and is anyone interested? also it has a ez loader trailer. |

Ok, since nobody else had come along, I'll chime in here. Any of the old Aquamatic 4 cylinder engines have a rarity about them....they're not made anymore, same with the outdrive. that said, having a 280 on a 17 ft 1983 boat is rare, from a Bayliner owner's perspective.(VP's largest customer at the time) 280's on Bay's were generally reserved for small cruisers. I doubt you have power trim....probably just tilt. Power trim very common in 280's unless it's a larger craft. Always a market for both pieces. The 280 is interchangable, for the most part, with it's predecessor's in the VP line. Good Luck! Ted |

Hi Ted and thanks for the reply. I believe that I do have tilt/trim and I will send pics on why I believe it is trim. It has a trim guage on the dash and the pump is the late style pump system. After looking at these let me know if I am correct. Ooops, I have to downsize my pics before I can send them to be posted And also check out this link at doug russell.http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&grou p=2813&GroupList=2819,2797,2796,2808,2810,2811,2801,2794,2795,2798,2818,2817,280 0,2807,2802,2812,2821,2813,2806,2815,2816,2799,2804,2805,2803,2820,2814 |

Hi Richard. Slight typo last post...Power trim "NOT" very common in 280's.....That said, if you have the gauge, you should have the trim unless is was changed at some point. Your Thunderbolt looks like it's lucky. El Pescador is the resident guru on Volvo Penta here and hopefully will come along soon. Ted |

Thanks again Ted. The link you sent doesn't show the extra wide part of the outdrive that holds the hydraulic cylinders that raise and lower the outdrive. in the owners manual they call it a 280T outdrive. If it weren't for all the special hoses and fittings it would be a great system. As it is all the hoses are dry rotted. I was wondering if anyone else may have found a way around the special fittings that V/P wants to rake our eyes out over? If these were standard fittings they could be replaced for about 1/4th the cost of O/E hoses which is about $450.00. |

Richard, this may be the link you are looking for: http://www.volvopentastore.com/CONNECTING_COMPONENTS_AQ_DRIVE_UNIT_280_WITH_POWE R_TRIM/dm/store_id.366--session_id.949025862--cart_id.443433535--category_id.333 252--list_time.1191833621--view_id.328552 Regarding the fittings, you may want to try to re-use the old ones (if they are good) in new hoses made by a shop specialized in hydraulics, or ask the shop how much would cost to make new hoses if they provide all the materials (including fittings). Personally, I think you may want to bite the bullet once and get the hoses replaced if the rest of the system is good; chances are they will last you a lifetime. |

I have an early to mid 80's 280 outdrive with tilt only. Can power trim be added or is there any aftermarket way to add power trim. Thanks, Paul |

I changed out all of the hoses on the inside of the boat to standard NPT. Now I can have my local NAPA make me a new hose for $13, instead of VP's $94. I did the same for the exterior hoses as well. I was able to track down the nut and ferrule system for short money; $4-7 each and have the local shop make the hoses. It took me a great deal of time to figure it out, but I was tired of shelling out $50-$100 for each hose! I will see if I can find some part numbers for anyone interested. |
