How much play is acceptable on the 280 leg? I can shake both back-and-forth about 3/4 to 1". Thanks, |

Are you talking about play in the steering helmet / fork, or among the propeller when the drive is in gear (engine off obviously)? |

The amount of acceptable 'play' in your steering system is somewhat up to your discretion. For many years my steering system was so loose you could spin the wheel over a 1/4 turn and the leg did not move. The more play the greater the risk of failure. The first thing to check is the bolt and bushing on the steering helmet. VP used three different styles over the years. You will have to confirm your app. Take at look at part #s 14, 15 and 79 in the following link: http://volvopentastore.com/CONNECTING_COMPONENTS_AQ_DRIVE_280/dm/store_id.366--s ession_id.440637732--cart_id.413380655--category_id.333215--list_time.1189544428 --view_id.328150 You also want to check the bolts and condition of the bores in the steering fork where the helmet attaches, #s 5, 8 and 9 in the link above. I found the majority of 'slop' in my steering to be attributed to smoked bushings installed between the TS and the steering fork. See part #s 11 and 12 above. If you end up driving out the steering fork to replace these bushings make sure you install a new Vring. This will keep out water. I have a ton of these bushings, bolts, helmets and forks leftover from a major rehab job this summer. Let me know if I can help you out. |
