my boats in the shop and the mechanic is telling me i need a new engine due to damage caused from an exhaust manifold failure that allowed water to feed directly in to the engine. he offered me three fixes.
1: buy new rebuilt block and rebuild/swap rest of engine 7900$
2: buy certified pre owned engine complete package 8100$
3: they have a previosly owned 5.7l mpi mercruiser in stock 7600$
my current engine is a 5.7l efi carburated mercruiser.
which option sounds best to you pros?
what concerns should i have on the previously owned mpi?
what qustions should i ask?

help me if you can!
Jason

A remanufactered long block cost ~ $2500 max

All parts can be swapped and new manifolds and elbow/risers can be purchased.

Maybe get out of it ~ $3500

If you have the marina do it you may be at there mercy!!

Try http://www.michiganmotorz.com/
They can offer you either a re-man or new GM for likely less than what you are being quoted.
They can offer you long block engines, complete engines, complete engines with exhaust and Closed Cooling systems.
Good people there!

Keep your old parts..... someone out there will buy some of the usable parts from you.

Lucky for me I found a 90 hour 2006 Mercruiser 350 magnum long block a year ago. The fi was trashed so I bought a used intake and re-used my carb. and all externals from my 1994. Had to add a electric fuel pump. Used block $400, used intake $100, gaskets $100, chain hoist $40, gas to Florida and back @ $4 per gallon $ a lot, free labor from my bro-n-law and myself -- Total cost of re-power $1000, runs like a scalded dog.

"Had to add a electric fuel pump"

Hopefully you also added the low-oil-pressure-shut-down to the fuel pump circuit! Yes?

That would be the oil pressure sender location and it requires a oil pressure switch teed off the fitting. the 12 volts that supplies the pump is run thru this so if you loose oil pressure the fuel pump shuts off or lack of when starting prohibits the pump from running ( I believe ~10-15 psi is required) for switch to close.
Standard issue for any marine electric pump application
