I have a TRS with power steering at low speed it turns fine.High speed it turns fine to the right but where ever you stop turning it will not turn back to the left until you slow down. Thanks to anyone who may have an answer to this problem. |

The power assist cylinder and or valving is bad. I am not sure how to repair only replace. This is the assembly at the transom. |

It sounds like your trim tab is out of adjustment, See number 14 in this link. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=%2076022&ivar=images/CRUI SER/76022/1403.png&inbr=986&bnbr=70&bdesc=GEAR+HOUSING+%28TRS%29 It will take a few test runs to get it right, But by turning this tab it should help with the steering torque at higher speeds. Start with it straight then turn it a few degrees and try it till you feel the steering turns ABOUT the same in both directions. |

I would think if the trim tab was twisted all the way to one side it MAY make it a bit tough to turn but not cause it to STOP allowing you to turn the wheel. I have had this condition happen before and the assist assembly is the normal cause. Think of the issue here A TRS drive......'70's or so thats 30 + years old...........lucky its still works at all. |

kghost you do have a very good ideal also and it may be that, When I read his post that was the first thing that popped into my head is all, And if he has had any thing done to the drive recently someone may have turned it on him, Plus I have experienced myself that if the tab is turned oneway it is VERY hard to turn the wheel back to the left and the boat would not turn to the left it would only go straight at speed till I slowed it down. It's just helpful opinions is all, It's kind of hard to really say over the net without being there.

I agree, it is very cifficult to answer some of these questions....... What led me to the answer I gave was he said he could NOT move it at all. I am sure you have driven a customers boat while lake testing and felt a shutter when turning the steering wheel. Mine does it a small amount and in a worst case senerio I believe it would be what he describes. |
