Did you check to see if your kill switch at the shifter was up in the run position? Does your 4.3 have a Carburetor or is it a EFI? If carbed Did you pump the throttle two times and leave it open a little bit? Did it try to start at all or just crank? Do the gauges move when you turn the key on? Does the RPM gauge go up while cranking engine? Was it a hot day? What have you checked so far? |

You maybe loseing spark then, The easiest way to check for spark in my opinion is to hook up a timing light to the coil wire first and crank the engine over and watch the light to see if it flashes bright and fast, Then move it to a few spark plug wires down by the spark plugs and crank it over and see if you get a few flashish here and there while cranking it over, If you do get some good flashes, You will then need to see if you are getting fuel inside the carburetor by pulling off the flame arrestor of the carburetor and looking down inside while someone pumps the throttle, If no then you will need to see if fuel is even getting to the carburetor by pulling off the fuel line going into the carburetor and cranking the engine over to see if it is pumping fuel, Becarefull and have rags covering the area if and when you do this step. You should also pull the fuel filter and see if it's full or not, If it's not you should fill it up and try to start it again at home, Do not for get to hook up the flushing kit that goes around your stern drive and turn the garden hose all the way up before cranking or starting the engine. |

WOW Becarefull if he can't get it under warranty, Because I hate to say it But there has been some shops caught trying to pull them self out of the bad economy if you know what I mean. If I had your engine serial number, I would be able to tell you if you are still within warranty or not from MerCruiser. |

Hmmm thats what i was thinking. As I took it to this guy and he said that it is the ignition module then i went back to the dealer who told me to contact this other guy regarding my warranty and this other guy kept saying (he hasnt even looked at the boat yet) if you put bad fuel in there its not covered as if he was going to say that whatever the problem is is not covered by warranty so i tink the dealer and his friend could be shady. That would be good if you could tell me if the warranty is still valid serial is: 1A046517 |

Did YOU buy the boat new from a MerCruiser dealer? This engine was never Registered from new. You should try to go back to the dealer you bought it from and have them register the Engine, Drive and Transom. If that can't be done then you will want to find a different MerCruiser dealer that is well known in your area to do a good job and take it to them and have them Register your boat with MerCruiser and have them fix it also, You may need your new boat contract, Or proof of purchase date to you. Now the warranty will normaly be up to two years after the day you bought the boat from new, But you will want to look on the contract to see if the dealer sold you a Product Protection warranty for a few more years, If not then this would be a good time to try to get one I would not go back to them guys if I was you. Take a look at this link at punch in your zip code and see what other dealers could help you out if you can't go back to the dealer where the boat came from. http://direct.where2getit.com/cwc/apps/w2gi.php?&client=mercurymarine&template=s earch. If you need to use a different dealer then try to find a Premier Service dealer in your area to help you out, You will be better off. Below is your info. You will want to try to do this as soon as you can. Good luck. ENG serial#: 1A046517 Model# 42110G5US 1998M MERCRUISER 4.3L ALPHA 1.7R 4.3L ALPHA NOT REGISTERED Warranty Period: NONE Product Protection Period: NONE Manufacture Date: 04/09/2007 Date Type Dealer Information Misc. Put that plug wire back on and find a dealer to fix it quick like. And find out from the guy you bought the boat from why he never registered the boat. Don't wait to long, call the headquarters of merc do what you have to get it registered. |

May the force be with you. My old pos 85' looks better and better everyday, none of that electronic crap on it, battery, solenoid, points, want to find a problem on my pos i use a jumper wire. May be too early for you but my buddy bypassed everything, like the puter on his 5.0 and installed a hei unit, one wire in, one wire out and a wire to the tach. Everything included in the one unit. Cheap also, but that was after a year or so of burning out coils. |
