1995 Alpha 1 Gen II 3.0 engine. Last time out leaving the dock as I gave it gas the engine got to about 3000 rpms and we lost forward thrust and heard a roaring/groaning sound from the back. Pulled the lower unit up and found nothing on the prop so decided to try again. Same problem, but as long as the rpms were down below 3000 ran fine. Since we were crabbing just a short distance from te dock decided to give it a go since it was the last time out this year. After running our trotline maybe 20 times at about 900 rpms,it was time to head back. Now it wouldn't go over 2000 without slipping out. It got worse as we went before losing all drive completely. Checked the engine compartment and found the coupler/shaft area to be very hot but normal engine temps. Shut it down and got towed the last few hundred yards to the dock. It had completely stopped engaging in forward or reverse at this point. Also smelled like a clutch slipping does. When it cooled down at home started and put it in gear and it engaged. Did notice a grinding/knocking sound from the top of the outdrive and it seemed to be getting warm so shut it off. Haven't done anything since. Sounds terminal to me, but thought I'd ask the experts. |

You say the boat didn't overheat? First thing i would do is see if a new prop, the boat moves. I always keep a spare onboard just for this reason. Happened to me. If with a new prop the boat doesn't move i would, drain the oil, and see if there are alot of metal pieces in the drive. Then finally if you smell rubber behind the motor, then i would pull the motor and replace the coupler. I think your upper drive went, and not the coupler sorry. |

Ayuh,... I'm with BD,... Drain the drive oil,+ Look for Metal... Your discription started out sounding like the Coupler Puked,... But,.. Like Chief says,... It shoulda been Overheating... If you don't find Metal in the oil,... It's probably the Coupler... Run your fingers around the coupler,+ the output shaft at the back of the motor,... If your hand comes up covered with powdered metal,+ rubber,... You've found the Problem,.. Blown Coupler... |
