OK, so I totally rebuild my mid-80's 470 merc, blue-printed top to bottom. Finally get it all back together, she fires up and sounds fantastic. I notice however that the coolant in the reservoir is now water and that while idling for an hour, have pumped all the coolant out the exhaust. I check the connections on the new 4" heat exchanger and all is hooked up properly, and heat exchanger is not bad. I can't figure out how the fresh water got into the closed coolant loop!

Any suggestions? Exhaust manifold issues?

Are you absolutely sure the hoses are not hooked up bass akwards? Pressure test the coolant reservior and watch for coolant in the water line.
