Hello, I have a 1996 bayliner with the 3.0/alpha1 power package. I have previously owned a boat with a volvo-penta package and am new to the mercruiser boats. In my volvo the impeller is cam driven and on the front of the engine. I understand that the impeller is located in the drive unit on the mercruiser. I have a stupid question about the impeller. Does it only turn and pump water when the outdrive is in gear? Also, unknowing of the impeller location, I spliced a t-fitting into the raw water hose on top if the engine so I could by-pass the "rabbit ears" and run water directly to the engine. I ran the engine with the drive dis-engaged and winterized it with anti-freeze the same way (with the thermostat open of coarse). I am wondering if I could have damaged the impeller by not running water through the pick-up on the drive. Please let me know your opinions. Thanks-

the impeller is running when ever the engine is running regardless of gear selection.

well.. I know what you mean by T fitting, and that should force water in both directions BUT.. the impeller will want to push water/air back up the hose towards the engine, so yea.. unless you saw water come out the water inlets of the lower unit you would have destroyed the impeller pretty quickly.

The impeller is at the top of the lower section of the gear case, with the drive in forward remove the nuts & bolts remove the lower and replace the impeller and upper and or lower housing as needed.

If you want, you could put in a scupper(water intake on the bottom of the boat) and a raw water pump on the front of the engine.

Bt Doctur, I have all the manuals that I need but I went to iboats.com and didn't see any section marked "adults only" so I can see why Adam thought you were messing with him. Adam I can assure you that Bt Doctur would not intentionaly insult you, he is always a ton of great knowledge and very helpful.

Adam

I do not know who told/show you how to winterize a merc 4 cylinder but here is MY method and been doing it for almost 20 years with no failures or issues.

Winterization for a merc 140 4 cylinder.

1. Add appropriate amount of Stabil to gas tank.
2. Remove lower unit oil fill plug and check for water contamination. If oil looks good reinstall plug. If oil is milky or water comes out, outdrive must be serviced to find bad seal.
3. Hook up water hose to ear muffs and attach to outdrive and make sure outdrive is lowered almost all the way down.
4. Turn on water at hose.
5. Start engine and let run for 30 minutes at ~ 1000 rpms.
6. Turn engine off.
7. Turn water off and remove ear muffs.
8. Remove motor plug, right side of engine near oil pan.
9. Poke thru with small screw driver to loosen up all cast and rust so the water flows out steady.
10. Remove the plug in the manifold, it is under the manifold ¾ of the way back towards the back of engine, poke it clear so the water comes out in a steady stream.
11. Remove the LARGE water hose in the front of the engine where it attaches to the thermostat housing.
12. Remove the incoming water hose and the small hose (that goes from the exhaust manifold to the thermostat housing) where they connect to the thermostat housing.
13. When the water has drained out of the block and the manifold reinstall the plugs. DO NOT over tighten them just good and snug.
14. Have 1 gallon of RV antifreeze ready, pour ¼ of it into the short hose and it will go directly into the exhaust manifold. Pour ¼ of it into the incoming water hose and make sure you hear it come out the outdrive!!! This back flushes the incoming water thru the power steering cooler if present and the transom assembly thru outdrive (you may have to raise the hose up several inches to allow the antifreeze to flow). Pour the rest into the LARGE hose that was removed from the thermostat housing, this goes straight into the motor.
15. Reinstall all the hoses and tighten the clamps.
16. Raise the outdrive to trailer position.
17. Unhook battery and you are done!!

This applies to most 4 cylinder mercruiser engines RAW WATER (not closed cooling systems)

kghost, Thank you for taking the time to respond with that information. For the most part, I did those very same things. The only difference is that I warmed the engine up and while it was running dumped in 2 gallons of rv anti-freeze mixed with a little wd-40 for rust prevention. Granted, most of that 2 gallons went out on the ground, but I wanted to make sure that there was no water left in the system. I also backflushed the raw water supply hose with antifreeze. If there is any crucial thing I forgot please let me know.......and again thank you for the response, I am sure there will be others who will find the info very helpful as well.

Well the only thing I can say is...........

When running antifreeze thru the engine while running does NOT neccessarily mean you displaced all the water in the engine.

I have replaced many a motor after just such a method done by the owner.

I prefere to drain it manually and put in rv antifreeze as a precautionary measure.

Running the engine is only to get STABIL throughout the fuel system, and fogging if desired NOT to winterize the engine.

Of course if you stick the outdrive in a ten gallon tub of antifreeze it most likley will work but that is lazy and over kill.

kghost, I will drain my block out tonight. The boat is stored in my garage and we have not seen any freezing yet this year so I am sure it is fine. Thanks-
