Hello new on here so excuse if i get some of the tech info wrong but i have a problems with my shifting. bought the boat this year, engine runs like a dream and has brand new alpha 1 leg. when the micro swich (aka Kill switch ) is on and in position the boat start like a dream. once it is shifted into gear (forward or reverse) the switch goes over the v mount that it is suposed to sit in. it then stays there and in turn cuts the engine out. When i adjest the short shift cable to try and keep the switch from poping over hte top of the v mount i cant then select a gear gear (either forward or reverese). The boat has never been run in the water since the new leg and has the old shift cable on it.

Is the cable stretched and needs replacing?
Does it just need fine tuning?
Is this a common problem?

I am desperate to get the boat on the water and would like any pointers to what might solve this problem. It is really anoying as when i take the switch off and try it out in the yard it works 100% but as soon as hte switch goes on it prevents the boat from running. I have bought a spare short shift cable just in case.

It sounds like your lower shift cable is stiff for some reason, or perhaps your lower shift shaft or slider mechanism is stiff. Any of these issues will cause the symptoms you are seeing.
The shift cable may have gotten pinched or kinked when the engine was being put in, which renders it useless.

Since the boat is new, I would take it back to your dealer, and get them to make it right. There is no reason this should be up to you to fix.

sorry i should have said the boat is a 1993 searay which has done very few hours but had a new leg as the last owner forgot to put hte rubber o ring on the leg after replacing oil!
the cable does seem stiff but i think that it is that the cables are int he incorrect place. Are there standard measurements that the cables shoudl be set to so i can try that before replacing the cable?

Tom; Try this:

7. If the engine inexplicably dies when shifting into gear, or while accelerating or decelerating, the interrupt switch may be the cause. If the shift cables are out of adjustment, or if the lower shift cable is damaged or stiff (or the drive leg shift mechanism is stiff), this will put extra load on the actuator arm (sufficient to overcome the centering spring) and the switch will close, thus killing the engine.

8. To resolve this situation first make sure the shift cables are adjusted correctly per instructions. If this does not resolve the issue, disconnect the upper shift cable eye, and manually move the lower shift cable lever back and forth to push the lower cable in and out. It should move freely from stop to stop without binding or tight spots or excessive effort. One finger should do it easily. If binding or sticky such that the switch V notch arm visibly moves, the cable likely needs replacing, or the shift lever mechanism in the drive leg needs servicing.

9. Since replacing the lower shift cable with the engine in place is a rather ugly job, first remove the drive leg and recheck the cable operation. The problem may be in the drive leg shift shaft mechanism, or the upper shift shaft arm, or the roller and slider mechanism. Make sure these all operate freely, then re-install the drive leg and retest the lower shift cable.

Tom;

You said something about cables not being in the right place. Not sure what you mean by that, but the only cable that affects the interrupt switch is the lower shift cable, and that would not likely have been moved since originally installed.

The cables running forward to the throttle quadrant will only cause stiff operation of the throttle if binding or pulled too tight around corners; not untimely operation of the shift interrupt.

Since the boat is a 1993, I would suspect you may need a new lower shift cable if it has never been replaced, regardless of hours. Unless you are real handy and patient, this should be a dealer job.

both cables were hanging loose and not conected when i bought the boat. hoave found out tonight that there is too much resistanc in the short shift cable which is not allowing the v mount part to spring back therefore the switch was remaing closed! pretty much what you said about it being stiff. Having a new cable fitted this week and should be good for the weekend. your first comments lead me to the answer so many thanks for your help
