I was going to put my lower half of my out drive back on today after I put a new impeller in it and I noticed the seal in the bottom of the upper housing where the drive shaft goes thru to engage the spines was bad, I took it out and now I have a question, where can I find one and what is it called? I took it out from the bottom so I know I can put it in from the bottom, has anyone every done this? What does it seal? this is the seal where the drive shaft from the lower unit goes up into, It has spines on top of the shaft and the seal is the one pressed into the bottom of the upper half of the out drive. Has anyone done this? |

"where can I find one and what is it called?" Ayuh,.... It's called a Seal.... There's actually 2 of them there..... Merc.#s 26-32511,+ 26-96503 Or,.. Seirra part #s 18-2049,+ 18-2056,... These can probably be bought Right Here at marineengine.com,... Or at your local Napa... "I took it out from the bottom so I know I can put it in from the bottom, has anyone every done this?" Ayuh,... It'll work... "What does it seal?" Oil above,+ water/ exhaust below.... "Has anyone done this?" Ayuh,..... It happens Everyday....... |

I see that the top seal seals the drive oil and can only be installed from the top. but the one I took out is a oil seal that keeps water out of the area around the botton of the spined shaft where the drive sahft connects. I am not removing the top seal just the bottom on and I got it out already, the rubber was coming apart so I knew I needed one. Also my drive shaft does not have a place for the oring that came with the water pump kit. Do I just forget it since I dont have a place for it? |

I'd suggest you take a look at "Mercruiser Service Manual Number 6" (google it for the PDF), but I can't get the link to come up right now. Anyway, it has a good parts diagram of the upper unit that would help you with this kind of question (what part is it?).. of course you've already got that answer.. but just for reference, it's a good manual to have |

"Also my drive shaft does not have a place for the oring that came with the water pump kit. Do I just forget it since I dont have a place for it?" Ayuh,...... If you're talking about the 1 that goes about an Inch from the splines of the top,...... That grove has been deleted from the later model shafts, because the shafts would Break right there.... Here's the Factory Manual,....... |

I can't sing and I am what I call a "techno peasant" when it comes to computors. That being said, how do you view this factory manual that Bondo put a link to? I can only see what seems to be the first 7 pages. If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be great. SBJ |

Bondo, Thanks for the link. I'm getting ready to rebuild an Alpha One that has been setting for 5 yeare. This will really help. James, Click on the link that Bondo sent. Once there page down to the Sections page, then click on any of the A, B, C, etc subsections and the link will open the diagrams. Thanks again Bondo, |

Bondo, Thank you very much for making this available. Larry, Thanks for the assistance. One last question if I may..... What size of SD card would I need to save this information to it? If indeed it is possible. James |

"Bondo, Thank you very much for making this available." Ayuh,..... You're All Welcome...... These manuals can be saved to disc by clicking on the appropriate button at the top of your screen, in the toolbar... But,..... You'll have to Save Each individual section,... You Can't save the Whole thing in a single file, but you must save it as single files in a folder..... Good Luck.... |
