Well, the starter finally died on me. luckily it was on the ramp before launching and not in the middle of the water. 
Now all it does is click when I turn the key, i assume the click is the solenoid so its probably still good. Just to make sure I'm looking at the right thing, the starter I need should be
18-5900
its a 1979 mercruiser 140hp #1 motor, sn 51544##
Is that the right starter for it? |

Glad you weren't stuck with a towing bill..
Yes 18-5900 would be right.

The starter solenoid or the slave is clicking?
starter list 142.00
appears to be the correct one |

the clicking could indicate low votltage also, I would check it first. |

You should check the solenoid first as it can click but still not supply power to the starter. It is like a switch so it can make a clicking sound but the electrical contacts inside might be bad. Try have someone turn the key to the start position while you test for power at the big terminal going from the solenoid to the starter motor with a test light, if it has power it will be the starter, if you get no power it will be just the solenoid. |
