Anyone have any ideas where to track down a propblem with my stern drive trim pump, this is a 1975 mercruiser 233, and the pump will power the drive up, however it will not power it down, the motor only runs when pushing the down button and the drive does not go down, after hitting the up switch a half dozen times, then the down function works, just to have it act up next time, please help, thanks

The first thing I check is to see if there is 12V to the small power wires at the solenoids when the up and down switches are thrown. Then I jump the large wires at the solenoids to see if the pump will fire up when you bypass the solenoids. Reason for this is that solenoids often fail.

Follow this forum down a few threads and you will see several posts on trim problems. In the replies, Guy Gaspar gives a very thorough treatise on troubleshooting the trim system. Following his lead should bring you to the source of problem.
