HI..great site. My question regards my 25 hp tohatsu 2-stroke. At WOT, the motor sputters and at times dies out totally. If I throttle back, works fine. Whats up....clogged carb, or potential spark on coil issue. Lastly, can this motor push my 16.8 foot Smokercraft up to at least 15 to 17 mph? I don't expect it to plane the boat out, but how about more than 7 to 10 mph that it pushes it at currently at max throttle. Insights/suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If your boat does not plane it cannot go any faster than what you are getting now. The engine is too small for the application, but, once you get the engine fixed, it can plane the boat with a low enough pitched prop. You need to troubleshoot the engine to determine the problem as it could be fuel system, ignition system or mechanical in nature.

Look for an air leak in the fuel line somewhere before the fuel pump. A tiny air leak can raise hell with these things.
