I just bought a sailboat with a 1991 Tohatsu 2-stroke 3.5A (forward only; no neutral). Fired it up (sounded good) but it had zero water discharge from telltale tube. Telltale tube is clear as is water intake. I understand that impeller for this motor is located on the propeller shaft rather than at top of lower unit. I'm inclined to remove the two bolts and plate that are just forward of the prop to look for impeller (rather than removing the lower unit). Am I on the right track? Should I expect oil behind this plate?

Behind the plate is the cup where the impeller rides. No oil at that point. |
