Have been having to regularly replacing my plugs. I have about 60 hours on this motor. Has run rich since new. When traveling through no wake zones the motor loads up and is difficult to get up on plane. Once cleared out it runs fine until I troll again. Has been to the dealer three times nothing was found wrong. Its at a new dealer now and they said I should change the coils, stator and CDI. I'll buy a new motor before I do that. Do these motors typically run rich? I use regular gas, should I be using premium gas? Any ideas?

I have a 2003 DT150 and had the same symptoms as you are describing. Mechanic found a piece of oyster shell had the thermostat stuck open. Now it runs like a champ. What size boat do you have yours on and how many rpm's are you turning at wide open throttle and what pitch prop. Thanks.

Its on a 21' Fish-Master. Thanks for the feedback. This motor is fuel injected, I don't think it has a mixture screw.

panaman, I have the same boat and motor as you. I have not had it very long, but I am not having the same problem as you. I have a rough idle which persists even though I have changed plugs and decarbed the engine. It run ok from about 2000 RPM on up. I have seen a number of posts on various forums where owners complain of the same rough idle, but have yet to see anyone who has found a cure. I only mention it because I would like to be able to troll with downriggers, but I don't beleive that the engine will run well enough without fouling the plugs. Has your engine ever idled smoothly?

Just-In-Time, I am in Birmingham, Al. I bought my boat to striper fish in the lakes close to me and possibly use a bit at the Gulf Coast. As I mentioned I would like to get the idle to smooth out so that I could troll with downriggers, but I'm not sure that will happen.I'll work on that more this spring.
I see that you post quite a bit on the Suzuki forum. Your input is always helpful, particularly to me. I have never owned a Suzuki before(always an OMC guy). I am sure I will like it just fine if I can work on that one problem.

I am located in Lafayette Louisiana which is located on the gulf coast. I have a 2003 DT150 EFI on a 2000 19' Fishmaster. Wide stable boat, great fishability, boat runs 52 WOT, average 3 mpg and yes my motor does have that not so smooth idle, but I think it's the nature of the beast. Runs smooth underway and is fairly quiet for a V6 2 stroke. I know these motors have an on board computer but I don't know if it is used to tweak the engine performance or if it's just for diagnostics.

I,m in Slidell, Louisiana. I run 47(GPS)WOT. My idle and low speed trolling is not so smooth. The dealer is waiting for the factory rep to give him advise. All I needed was them to perform a diagnostics. When I get it back I'll check the thermostat. With many other people having the same problem I thought it may be in the factory programing. I know on cars they can re-load the program. Thats one of the questions he is going to ask the rep.

Fred Turner Jr. , panaman
check the tps values
if 5,6 is fouled might be a failed block check valve

if there is a clean spot on throttle valve
you need to clean the VST

check all wires on motor for rubbing on the cowling

panaman and TJ, are either one or both of you running jack plates? I am thinking of adding one. A 6 inch manual one so that I can fine tune just a bit. If you added yours as an after market thing what did you have to change out ie., anything to do with steering or controls? If it gets to be too much changing out I won't fool with it.

No Fred I don't have a jackplate, as of right now I have no plans of adding one. Boat gets up on step fine, the only advantage I see would be to fish in the super shallow waters and I don't want to tear up my lower unit any worse than it already is. I current have a chunk taken out of my skeg, but it has not affected the performance of the boat, as far as I know the skeg is there to protect the prop. Also my center console is farther back in the boat and I have a full length bench seat that folds to make the back deck. The center console in the newer fish masters are more in the center or forward in the boat and may distribute the weight better for shallow water take-off. I took my bench seat out and currently have 96 quart ice chest with a cushion seat. And it is working great and have lots more fishing room in the back. I'll have to find a picture and post a picture.

Panaman, has your dealer found out anymore info on the rough idle, engine adjustments, tweaking, or program software upgrades?

They said that all 6 coils read low, the stator may be bad and I should replace the CDI unit. What a joke. I asked what the symptoms of a bad stator was , he said I cuts out at high speed. I told him it runs great at high speed. Needless to say I payed $216 picked the boat up. This week I started the motor on a hose and it ran terrible. It stayed at 2000 RPM. It looks like they moved the throttle valve sensor all the way to one side. I also found loose washers in the engine compartment. They came from the oil tank attaching hardware. Went to the New Orlean's boat show Thursday night and bought a 225 HP Honda. The Suzuki dealer made a good offer on a 255 HP but after this service I just got I'm trying something new.

I have a 98 Suzuki 200HP EFI. It idles OK at 1000 RPM, but smokes a lot at idle. I also have lost about 5 MPH on top end. I have swapped the oil injector, pressure tank and both onboard computers and it runs about the same. Plugs are always black now. Do you think my injectors are shot? I have never swapped them out.
