I need to know if there is a surefire procedure for longterm storage for my 75 hp Honda 4-stroke. My situation is: boat and motor used in s.florida during winter months and stored for 8 months during summer. In the 12 years i've owned this motor I've had inconsistant results. Several times I've had to remove the carburetors and do a detailed cleaning job before I could restart my engine. The last few years I've gone to the extreme measure of trailering my 5000 lb boat and trailer rig 1600 miles north; then making the return trip back. Never have carb problems using this method...but I'm sick of trailering. I've tried running the fuel out and not running the fuel out, each time using fogging oil. I'm wondering if the lower two carbs don't get enough fogging oil (the plastic intake shroud may interfere somehow)...for some reason there always seems to be a little bit of fuel left to degrade into varnish. I'm thinking about trying to leave the motor down s.florida again and am hoping to find a better way to "pickle" it. suggesttions?. |

run seafoam in your fuel and engine before running dry, drain your carb bowls, fog before putting away. use fresh fuel on startup |

I have heard NOT to fog the carbs on a 4 stroke. Those carbs are not supposed to have oil in them like a 2 stroke. Condition the fuel, and drain the carbs completely. The Honda manual only states the fog the cylinders. |

Ok...that puts a new slant on things...I have always used fogging oil on all of my outboards in the past and have continued that practice when I started using the 4-stroke engines. Funny thing is I've had the same carb problems with my tohatsu 30 hp 4-stroke and I've been fogging it the same way. Basically I would run the engine and shoot fogging oil into the carbs until the engine quit, then for good measure I'd shoot some fogging oil into the bowl itself through the drain port, then I'd finish up with an application of the oil in each cylinder through the spark plug hole and hand turn the flywheel...so-o-o it appears I've been my own worst enemy.... thanks for enlightening me |
