I have a 1987 force outboard 125. It starts and Idles fine. When I go to take of it starts to cut out at about half throttle then picks up fine until I hit full throtle and starts to cut out again. If I bearly back off of full throtle it runs fine. Any Ideas on what may be the problem. |

You need to determine if it's a fuel problem or ignition.
Ignition can be test while running with a timing light (and a buddy to help). If you are losing spark when the motor hesitates then you know it's somewhere in the ignition.
Otherwise, I would suspect either the beginning of a clog in one or more of the carbs or a fuel pump that is starting to give up on you.... |

I have really check out the carbs and fuel lines and believe this is an ignition problem. what would be my next step as towards finding out what it could be. Last year I replaced the stator and the trigger at the first of the year, before that I replaced two coils believeing that might be the problem first, when doing this I replaced the two coils with black one's rather then the blue ones that were on the motor (so I have two black and two blue coils on the motor but it ran fine after replacing stator and trigger). The boat ran fine for the next half a season before this problem just started instantly and has ran the same ever since. I have noticed an adjustment on the trigger, could this have anything to do with the problem? I also took out the spark plugs and noticed the two plugs with the black coils seem to have black crust on them and more dry. Any more help would be greatly appreciated. How would I go about testing the ignition with a timing light. |

Jason, the black coils should not cause an issue - they are interchangable with the blues, no problem there.
To check with a timing light, leave the hood off the motor and hook a timing light to the first plug wire, take the boat out (a buddy can really help at this point) and as the motor starts to faulter, check to see what the timing light is doing (repeat this for each cylinder) - this will quickly help you determine if you are losing spark (or it is becoming sporadic) on any of the cylinders...
The black crust on a plug or two could indicate that the carb feeding those cylinders is set a little too rich (too much gas = extra oil/carbon = extra black residue) |
