Bought a boat with a 1989 Force 150 hp. marine mechanic says top and bottom cylinders aren't getting enough fuel from carbeurators. This was determined by observing the spark plugs after running the engine. Told it was not worth fixing but second opinions are always worth while. It sounds labor intensive to determine problem. It is a 3 carb engine feeding the five cylinders. Any feedback on this problem would be welcome. |

Could be a leaky carbie gasket or two, some engines run leaner on the outside....did he say how extreme the difference was? If it isn't running excessively lean it may be fine as says. But I would want to get it sorted. |

Thanks for the reply Andy. He did not say how extreme the difference was. He did it solely on observing the spark plugs. From my perspective the outer ones were not as "wet" with what I assume is the fuel mixture. |

Its the colour they run at that is important. The plugs ahould run brown, light or dark isn't critical but white is bad. |

Bad reeds are common in those. They get sucked into the motor. You should check compression first on these. If not remove and clean the carbs. |

Thought a carb rebuild would be a good start. Are reeds still available for the Forces? Where do they end up if sucked in to the motor? I'll check the compression. |

Doug, reeds are available at any Merc dealer for about 12 bucks (a row - 5 petals). If they chipped/broke they would have either got blown back out through the carb throat or sucked into the lower crank-case. My 2 cents - personally I wouldn't spend alot on the motor either, although the 150's still have pretty good parts availability. The ignition system is not great and is prone to fail (and very expensive to replace), they also have a habit of eating piston rings. I have just finished up a rebuild on a 90 horse for a buddy. It was only feasable because we did the work ourself. It has come in at about 800 bucks in parts - if you added labour on that it would have been "not feasable" for a 18 year old Force motor.... |
