If this appears as a double post, I apologize. I think I pushed the wrong button last time so I don't think my previous post will appear.
I have two Chrysler 3 cylinder outboards:

85 Horsepower
Model 857H8F
S/N 2572
Year 1978
540 hours since new

75 Horsepower
Model 757HB
S/N 18060
Year 1975
46 hours since new

The 75 was just sea trialed today after I swapped out the older more tired 85 and put on the 75 to try it for the first time. This is a beautiful 1975 75hp Chrysler with only 46 hours on it. What's really killer about it is that I only had to pay 75 bucks for it. Fresh water engine, no corrosion. Like new. It runs like a new engine. I lost 5mph from what the 85 will push me along at though. Big deal. I can't fish at 35 mph.

The 75 has a two piece gear housing lower unit, and the 85 has a one piece gear housing lower unit. I want to install the 85's lower unit on the 75 because the 85's unit is bigger and wider, and has much better "rudder effect" for better directional stability at lower speed and trims directionally better at planing speeds. Any problems with a swap like this? The engines are almost identical in every other respect. Lots of interchangeability .

Thanks,

Robert Reed

I have a 35hp Chrysler Mod. 3551 I think it is a 1970 I just got it and it won't start. I don't know much about engines but willing to learn with the spark plugs out it turns over great but once I replace the plugs it may turn over once but then it moves very slow then it stops moving. Any help would be Great !!

Sal M.....you may have weak hands and can't turn the motor over the compression stroke :-) Or you may have long reach plugs in a short reach head.
