Hi,im taking the g/box off a 1983? 18hp long shaft,serial number 6432810,how do u disengage the gear shift rod.do you have to dismantle the rod at the top,on that cross shaft by the carbi,and then feed it thru the whole swivel tube,or does it come apart further down,.ive had the g/box down a bit,couldnt c anything.thanks |

I seem to recall disconnecting a link under the carb area, on an older merc to disengage the gearshift - Someone who knows for sure will be along soon enough to point you in the right direction, I'm sure..... |

You were close, Strata. There's a screw on the port side of the mechanism. Remove it and the shaft will come out the starboard side. Jeff |

Hi,removing screw would have been easy if the screw had been brass,not s/s.seized.couldnt see any other way of disconnecting..screw snapped,and had to destroy plastic link to get rod unconnected.rest went easy.anybody sell those plastic links[2piece]?please,thanks |
