Hey everyone, I'm beginning the learning process of repairing outboard motors and picked up a Mariner 40 for my first project. I've been having one hell of a time determining the year model and I already need some parts. Mariner 40BE 676 BL 40656(and possibly a 4 on the end of that) I'm at my wit's end trying to determine the year model. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated |

Hi Shane,I get 1979 Yamaha built. Maybe, as this is a project I should leave it to Graham. He will also tell you that it is based on an older Yamaha and be able to give you the cross ref. |

Thanks Ian and Noel. I was told by the seller that it was an early 80's model. I got a great deal and the thing runs like a top. It even has a brass prop! I pulled the lower unit....1 of 6 bolts actually came out without breaking. I think I'm the first one to see the inside of that lower unit since it was built! All that being said, if I bought a Seloc manual in that year model range, would that be the right choice? I'm ready to re-assemble it, but I need a new impeller and would like to replace the gaskets. Is this a worthy project? Does anyone have any experience with this particular lineage of Mariner? |

I see Ian and I differ slightly on year slightly I haventaclue about these motors other than when I went to look at one Graham said that parts are going to be hard to get as they are based on yamaha's own older models and if he happens on this thread he will be able to give you the equivalent yamaha, whose parts are cheaper than mercury.Maybe take pump and impeller to a yamaha shop and they may help. I have a Seloc for my own motor and find it good, Mariner Outboard Tune-up and Repair Manual 1977-89 I believe is the one you need |

Well, anyone out there know how to point Graham in the direction of this post? I would like as much info as possible about my motor. I'm kind of sitting at a standstill. Thanks in advance. |
