I'm told it's a mercury. So is it a mercury with Yamaha head and cylinder and merc electronics or something else. And when did Merc stop using yamaha heads |

Scott, by 2000 Yami was mostly out of the picture and Merc was in joint production with Tohatsu by then. But the 25 horse and under 2 strokes used Yami powerheads and gears right up until production ceased in 2005. It's a Merc (I suspect the head may have been Chinese built based on a Yami design by 2000, don't have solid facts one way or the other) - Merc was never totally forthcoming with whose parts they used to build what motor. The "headless" models were most certainly from a Yamaha production facility - a design that Yami never incorporated themself into their own models. But even if Yami did build the powerhead, do not confuse it with a production Yamaha model. With the exception of the Yami/Mariners (which were just Yamaha's with Mariner decals/colours), anything that Yamaha produced for Merc was used exclusively by Merc, it never saw service on a Yamaha model. So, the carbs are Walbro's, the ignition is pure Merc as is the gear case (less the gears) and most of the other castings (even Honda used Merc gearcases for a number of years until they were happy with their own design). The powerhead is most probably a Yami design which may or may not have been mfg by them, ditto the gears. So yes, a typical Merc |
