I have some Quicksilver high performance gear lube. It specifies for all "Mercruiser Stern Drives" It does not mention whether it can be used in Mercury outboard gearcases. Is there any differences between the outboard gearcases and stern drive gearcases that would require different lubricants for each??? The outboard is a 1994 Merc/Yamaha 2+2 115 HP.

Bob, gear oil should be changed anually or every 100 hours of use, whichever comes first.

If you follow that schedule ANY gear oil that has a GL-5 rating (won't foam up and blow out your seals if you get some water intrusion) will work fine.

So any Marine gear oil (except type C designed for electric shift OMC's) or many of the "off road" gear oils for trucks plus numerous older brands of "hypoid" oil work perfectly.

Usually you will use a 90 weight or 80 or 80/90 - it can be normal "dino-oil", semi or fully sythetic (the latter two are just a waste of money in my opinion if you change it regularly).

If I had some sterndrive oil laying around, I would not hesitate to use it up in my outboards.
