My 1989 mariner 200hp on startup smokes alot. I get a nice cloud. I know smoke means the oiler is working but is their an adjustment? I have not seen anything that would do that on the motor. I am not having any other problems like foul plugs. I just think it is a bit odd on how much smoke I get.

So far I have rebuilt carbs replaced the stator for starting problem this year which seemed to fix the problem. Than last week I replaced the cap on the oil tank on top of the motor because it cracked and spit oil all over.

I also mid week replaced the throttle control will I need to adjust the throttle cables (old was flush mount quick silver and new is flush mount teleflex ch1700).

I am just trying to keep this motor running like new. Thanks for the help Randy

No reason to stress. My 1997 115 2+2 ELPTO was exactly the same from day one till today.

It all depends on the timespan between start-ups. If it's more than a day or so, the fuel will evaporate and oil is left behind. So, in short, it's oil-rich initially on start-up and leans out once idling. Also, when motors are cold, they tend to billow more than when warmed up. Nature of the 2 stroke beast. Well, that's my understanding of this system.

If you like the auto oiler leave it alone if its working. Otherwise take it off and premix then you know exactly how much oil is mixing with your fuel.

I get what you guys are saying I figured that sum. But it will smoke alot when I start it again like after fishing for 1-2 hours. The smoke will clear up fast but it just makes me wonder a bit the cloud is around 20 ft long prety much the length of the boat (Might have to try and point into the wind on start up). I am running quick silver oil I think the last jug was their premium oil. Is any other oil that might not smoke so much.

I am going fishing tomorrow so I see if it smokes alot in the hot weather.
