I have a 1990 40HP Mercury that will not idle. The engine sat for 4 years while I spent time in the desert. New fuel with STARTRON added, new plugs. Runs great at high RPM with use of the choke (in Neutral). Close chock lever, RPM drops and engine quits. If I quickly shift into gear (either Frw/Rev) engine will run. Good acceleration. Try low RPM and engine dies. |

Carbs are likely to be dirty. Rip into them with care & gasket set should do it right. Do impeller too, could be on it's way out from the hibernation. O ja, don't do more than 3k on the muffs. They tend to pop if there's no load of the crank. |

Thanks for the advice. Bought a SELOC manual (65-89). I checked serial number on line and it came up 89 not 90. It is oil injected with the oil tank in front of the carbs. Serial number 0C16012? Need help identifing year. Should I just order a Mercury manual? |
