I tried starting my 81 115 horse merc, ran the battery dead, changed the battery and now it just makes a grinding noise. Sounds like it's in the starter but could it just be the sylenoid?? Any help would be appreciated

If the soleniod goes bad it usually just clicks when you turn the key and won't let power get to the starter motor. I know this becasue I just had this happen to me. Odds are it is the starter.
