I'm buying a boat with a 1999 115 mercury 2 stroke that is blowing out water in all 4 cylinders. I havent gotten the boat yet going to get it this weekend. Any idea where to start, does this thing even have head gaskets or just a water jacket?

no head on this one just a water cover and gasket. You could have a bad base gasket, or exhaust plate gasket/cover thats bad. After that it gets worse, bent rods from trying to compress water or cracked case. Good luck

So start with the exhaust gasket first right?

I think I would check compression before buying. There are 2 gaskets on the exhaust plate and you want to make sure the plate is not cracked. I don't recomend buying a boat/ engine unless you know whats wrong. Unless you have a spare $12000 for a new motor.

I’m buying for the hull only but if the motor is salvageable all the better. Compression will be the first thing I check and if its good I'll move to the exhaust. Its been sitting for some time so I’m sure it will need to be freed up. Any suggestion?

PS: I found a mercury mechanic to change out the power head for $2000 if necessary, "with one year warranty"

I think you're on the right track, dump some oil on top the pistons and turn it by HAND. Then compression, water jacket cover(check for cracks) exhaust plate, base gasket.

To replace the base gasket I'll need to pull the powerhead right? Yea I'll save that for last. Thanks --- MH

Blowing water? How long has that moisture been there?

You might be in for some serious corrosion on internals there.

Keep the wallet at hand if you're really keen on rescuing this motor. Hopefully the electronics are still good?

If the water been setting in there for a while you will probably have rust spots on the crank from the moister maybe even some spots on the bearings.
