I bought a boat with this engine about 3 months ago and tach worked fine. Started acting up couple weeks ago and now doesn't work at all. When you turn the ignition key to "On" the tack moves to zero, when you start the engine it jumps to 3-4K rpm and then falls back to zero.

Test your rectifier/regulator.

I did check to make sure it was charging. It's putting out 14 volts so I assume it's working.

Did some more troubleshooting, I have battery voltage at the tach ground and power terminals. At engine idle, signal voltage is 5.8 V. at 2500 rpm signal voltage is 6.5 V. I'm assuming the tach is bad. Anyone want to confirm?

If your signal voltage is changing and your tack is not working and it has 12v and ground connected, sounds like you have a bad tack or a broken or bad connection. I would check all my connection and wiring before replacing.
