I'm working on a 74' 4hp merc40 ser # 3936540 The problen lies in the tiller throttle set-up at the engine side, the tiller throttle will rotate 360 degrees and I am trying to figure out which part may be the culprit, the gears mesh fine,I removed the assembly and the shaft seems ok,the gears will start to rotate the throttle then the tiller will just keep rotating..I have a parts list and diagram from sierra marine who has all the parts still available, but they all seem fine? the tiller end gears are not slipping, only the engine side,I did notice that someone had packed massive amounts of grease around the gears in question, should the gears have grease or be clean? thank's in advance for all the help...Don |

well I think I figured it out! It seem the gear on the lower part, the horizontal one,has a square drive like a 1/4 in drive ratchet that the metal shaft slides into, the gear itself is a hard plastic and if I hold the gear by hand the shaft will slip inside the gear as it appears worn, the part is available at crowleys marine, and cheap,so it must be a commonly replaced item on these? hope it does it! |
