Hey all, my 1986 Mariner runs great in gear, at idle, mid. throttle, and full throttle. The only problem is, it is hard to start sometimes taking a full minute. Any ideas? |

Yes they had a crappy, gravity fed primer system that is slow to react. Prime the snot out of it (10 seconds) before trying to cold start. And if it's electric start keep the key pressed in (choke) when you are turning the starter over as well. See if that helps... |

Thanks for the reply. I have tried all of that before, still takes awhile to start. A friend at work suggested changing the fuel pump diaphragm, what do you guys think? |

If the fuel pump was bad I would suspect issues all the time, not just cold. The primer is just a little solenoid valve, it may be shot. It has a (manual override) - little button (on the bottom I think). Next time before you try the key, take the hood off, press the little button for 10 seconds and then fire it up. If that makes a difference, replace the valve... |

I tried the solenoid valve but it still took awhile to start. Maybe I should consider rebuilding the carbs over the winter. Don't want to do it now I can put up with a hard starting motor. There is way too much fishing left this year. Thanks for the help. |
