Hello everyone, I would like to introduce myself to this forum, assuming you have room for one more

I just purchased a '87 Bass Tracker and was trying to educate myself on the motor when I came across this wonderful Forum!

The motor that is hanging off the back is a 40hp electric start Mariner. Here is the plate:
Mariner 40hp ID Tag

From what I can gather from some of my reading of prior posts I should have a '87 "C" Mariner made by Yami. This motor was made with older parts to sell at a discount.

The motor also has the AutoBlend system which was disconnected and gas/oil of 50:1 was used (for how long I don't know.) It appears this is a good thing.

Now for a few questions if you have the time:

1) Can I put a tilt/trim on this motor?
2) What are the problem area's with this motor?
3) Where can I go to get parts at a reasonable cost? If I go to Yami, what model would I tell them?
4) I assume this is an exhaust thru prop model?

Thanks in Advance for any hints.

Well start at the end question and work backwards :-)

Yes, through hub exhaust.

If you buy from Yami you have a "40FE" model. Merc still stocks many many parts for this but as you kinda suggest, their prices are higher than Yami.

There are really no "chronic" problems with this model - it was well designed and well built.

This did come with a power tilt option which sold for over 2000 bucks when it was available - you may find one somewhere like Ebay, but personally, I wouldn't spend the money.

It's just a 40 horse, not that heavy that you can't tilt it by hand and usually, after you have it properly trimmed it doesn't produce enough power that you have to fiddle with it (like you would with a larger motor) for different conditions.

Yes, the autoblend was a nightmare so someone did the motor a favour by throwing it far enough away that it couldn't spontanously reconnect.

Your last statement is partially true - it was made with slightly older Yamaha parts, but the 40FE that this is a carbon copy of, was in production at the same time as the "C" model Mariner and was one of their most prolific motors for either Mariner or Yami.

Many other Yami/Mariners were based on models that had been out of production (by Yami) for a number of years - this was one of the exceptions.

The 40 "C" model went on to be one of the first smaller motors with a gear driven oil pump - a design that Merc continues to use on new motors...
