Anyone know if ignition parts are interchanagle for a 1973 65hp merc with the donor motor being a 1976 65hp merc. The parts look exactly the same, but when I research parts for my 73 most of the ignition parts say 72-75 for year. Found a great deal on a parts motor but don't want to buy if I can't use. My motor is a 1973 65hp, serial# 3549717. It would not stay running unless I pumped the fuel bulb, then would run for a little and then want to die again. I rebuilt the carbs and the fuel pump. Put everything back together ( everyting is connected same as when I disassembled) now no spark at the plugs. Disconnected the mercury switch and still no spark. Have a friend with a UVA tester to do more troubleshooting but this parts motor is way to good a deal to pass up ( it has all the ignition parts and he only wants 150.00 for it). He said the motor worked before he started parting it out due to a bad cylinder. Parts are expensive or hard to find. Thanks. |

Your 1973 model will have a distributor style ignition (cap, rotor etc) just like a car used to have. The 76's had a stator/trigger/switchbox "thunderbolt" ignition, so no, they are not compatable at all... |
