I have a sweet 35 hp Mercury ob 1980ish that is hard to shift into reverse with remote controls. I have ruled out the controls and cables, the reverse hook bar, ive checked all external linkage, it seems like it is internal or maybe the cast cam slider mechinism under the carb that is hooked to the lower unit.
Any and all suggestions PLEASE |

HI,u could try draining the g/box oil and see if its clean,with no water[creamy]in it for a start.plus it will let u know if there is oil in there. |

the 35hp came out in 84 when merc changed the 40hp to a 4 banger. your engine is the same as the 40hp 83 and older, only ign changes.
The lower unit has a cam on the shift shaft that raises a rod to lock the engine when its in neutral and reverse. If the cam was installed in the wrong tooth when the water pump was changed it will be near impossible to shift. Check to see if your engine locks down when in neutral and rev, and is free in fwd, that should tell you whats right or not. Never shift into rev when the engine is off, the gears won't mesh and the cable will stretch or break. |
