Been working on a mark 55 LU and I can't get that big prop shaft nut off. (It's bad corroded.) Tried heat, penetrating oil, incantations, etc. Uh-uh. It's like the threads are welded together.

Other than smashing the nut to pieces--to save the housing--has anyone got an idea what to do next? I'm stumped.

Have you tried an impact wrench?

Hi,im a great believer in disc cutters,.if u get a 4inch metal cutting disc, and put it on the side of the nut,c if it will cut the nut without touching the prop,.if it will then u can disc cut the nut without touching the threads.then split the nut after.handy hint 1.12pm

Drill through the face of the nut at two points 180 degrees apart. Start with an eighth inch bit and increase to a larger bit. Eventually you will be able to split the nut with just a few taps on a small chisel.

IBN: Tried that with 90 lbs and only succeeded in wrecking my nomemade nut wrench a few times. It's corroded badly.

Ian: Not the nut that holds the prop on; it's the big aluminum nut inside the case.

Thanks Bob. I'll try that.

Now I'll need to find me another nut. Anyone have a source?

Update: Managed to claw all the seals out and will replace them with the stubborn prop shaft still in place. (Used an oxy/acetylene torch to blow the water pump cartridge out! Exciting.)

Still looking for another prop shaft nut if you see one someplace.

Thanks,

Jeff
